Drill Bits
Written By: JoeIn case you don’t know, a drill bit is an accessory for use with a drill. Whether it be a cordless drill, hammer drill or pillar drill. Just like drills, the drill bit is very dependant on the job of which you intend to use it for. Choosing the right drill bit is very important, not only in terms of size but also usage. For example if would be foolish to use a masonry drill bit to cut into aluminium.
If you select the correct drill bit you should have no problem cutting into most materials such as: Plastic, Aluminium, Brick, Steel, Wood and much more. Ultimately the harder the material you are cutting into the sharper and tougher the drill bit needs to be. The actual drill also needs to be powerful enough otherwise you won’t get anywhere.
Here are some of the most common drill bits:
Masonry Drill bits
As you will have probably guessed, masonry bits are used for drilling into brick, concrete, ect. Masonry bits are usually used with heavier duty corded drills, although if you are willing to put your cordless drill through some hammer that may also work.
Hole saw bits
These are used for cutting large holes into wood and sometimes other materials. They use a more saw like action than a drilling action which gives them their name. Often this kind of drill bit is used for creating tables, chairs, desks and other furniture.
Diamond Drill Bits
Diamond drill bits are a more hard wearing product than standard drill bits, so they are used when cutting into fragile materials such as glass or tiles. You will often see these used in bathroom and kitchen projects.
Screwdriver Bits
Screwdriver bits are most commonly used with cordless drills/screwdrivers. They offer a much faster alternative than a traditional screwdriver and come in all shapes and sizes.
Sharpening Drill Bits
To sharpen a drill bit you must identify what type of drill bit you are using. Then you must see what tool is required to sharpen, this could range between a professional drill bit sharpening tool to a standard file. The angle of the tip, or the blade is also very important so be sure to either do your research or consult a professional.
